Link It, Read it & Reap it

In looking closely at what I would like to attain in my research, I found the article, "Socioeconomic and home educational resource risk factors and Children’s literacy and social skills in Guyanese families: Mediating role of parental cognitive engagement and parental guidance" particularly interesting. In it, the authors took a deep dive into how socioeconomic status and home learning environments have a direct influence on children’s academic development. Throughout the article written by Lape et. al (2023), they highlighted how factors such as education, income, and access to learning resources play an immensely significant role in how children learn and their overall academic performance.

The close interaction between the home environment and learning outcomes is what stood out to me. It showed that the interaction does not only come about as a result of the material resources but also through the engagement of the parents. This shows a direct connection to my research as it reinforces the idea that despite some parents in Trinidad and Tobago having low literacy levels, their involvement in their children’s academic life is critical. Not only to their children’s mental health but also to the shaping of their academic success.

I find this particularly compelling because it repositions the conversation in the opposite direction of how people see low literacy levels as a limitation. Instead it can be viewed as a step forward in exploring a variety of support systems, strategies and interventions that can empower parents to meaningfully contribute towards their children’s learning.
